In the 2000’s, and especially in 2020 and beyond, the Executive Pastor role has become key to the success and sustainability of growing ministries. Ministries today face the following pressures:
- Doctrinal pressures from a shifting cultural landscape
- Expectation pressures from congregations expecting excellence and professionalism
- Staff pressures from untrained and disoriented staff
- Legal pressures from government entities
- The pressure of ambiguity of how to “grow’ in an new-normal world
It is the Executive Pastor who takes the Senior Pastor’s vision and helps the team navigate through these modern pressures to see vision become reality. Sadly, there is no formal training process for Executive Pastors. This is where the need for coaching comes in.
The mindset of the Executive Pastor is unique. Partly spiritual, partly practical. I use the word “SPRACTICAL!”
Executive Pastor Coaching includes systems and deeper issues. Effective XP Coaching will address the 5 Core Systems managed by the Executive Pastor.
Addressing systems, though, is not enough. Many leadership systems can be learned through church leadership conferences and webinars. The real transformation required for most Executive Pastors also involves interior work. Our personal leadership capacity is what will eventually support the growth and balance God brings to the church through systems.
Coaching for Executive Pastors
In my 14 years of ministry, I have coached Executive Pastors regarding fundraising initiatives, staff development needs, conflict resolution, and strategic planning. After experiencing the power of coaching myself I became a University-level trained coach (School of Management, University of Texas at Dallas). My coaching practice is informed by organizational theory, neuroscience, a love for Scripture, and my own Spirit-led ministry experience.
